Steinitz juniors are represented in almost all junior teams to represent Chess WP in the SAJCC 2014.
Steinitz junior teams also did extremely well in the CWP League and got many board prizes and also top three places in B and D divisions. The all junior (10 - 13 year old) Steinitz E Team won promotion to the C division by coming second in the D Division.

Chess WP High Performance Training Camp

Chess Heroes honoured on AFRICA DAY

8 year old Natasha Joubert was awarded a Certificate of Excellence in recognition and appreciation for her outstanding contribution made in sport in Africa. Natasha received this award at the Africa Day Sport Recognition Awards hosted by the outgoing MEC for Cultural affairs and Sport, Dr Ivan Meyer. Natasha is the current u8 girls Africa Chess Champion.

Steinitz Youth Club Evening

Our new Chess WP President, Dr Deon Solomons addressed the youth group. Thank you Deon for sharing your vision with our Steinitz youth members and parents. You made us all exited to be part of the next two years of your vision for chess and especially the youth.
The Steinitz youth group are immensely proud of all three Steinitz members on the Chess WP Exco.

Steinitz Club Championship Q1 (Round 1 -3)

22 February 2014

Round 1 to 3 of the 7 round 60-60 Swiss format Steinitz Club Championship has been completed. Provincial arbiter, Larissa van Wyngaard was the arbiter and the tournament was blessed with 17 players in the B Section (average rating 843) and 24 in the A Section (average rating 1509). Thanks Larissa for enabling us to run this rated tournament in such a professional way. A special thanks as well to Andrew Talmarkes for providing us with chess sets.

We will continue with round 4 on Thursday 27th of Feb and the tournament will be completed on Saturday 15th of March with rounds 5-7.

WIM Denise Frick (Winner SA Closed Chess Championship) gave our youth players a very interesting analysis of two of her games at the recent SA Closed. The way Denise presented not only the moves, but also her thought process and emotions throughout the games made this a very interactive and informative experience. Thanks Denise.

Zander van Wyngaard turned 8 years old and the club celebrated with him. Larissa brought a lovely chess cake and the cake was cut and enjoyed by everyone at the first break. Happy birthday Zander!

Cape of Good Hope Open Chess Tournament

31 Jan - 2 Feb 2014

The event was held at the St. G Primary School in Grassy Park, the first time that a major open event was held in this area. 146 players participated in 4 sections. The tournament was graced the presence of the Angolan Military Sports Club (VII Jogos Desportivos Militares), headed by Adelino Coreia, who also participated in the event. Some of these players were playing our Juniors on the 30th Jan club evening.
Luan de Jager finished on top of the A Section, winning 6 out of 7 games played. Due to the tie-break system he was declared the silver medal winner. Well done Luan.

The Angolan Military Sports Club (VII Jogos Desportivos Militares), headed by Adelino Coreia, visited our club and six of our strongest juniors played a friendly against the club. Chad Willenberg (B1), Luan de Jager (B2), Andrew Grimmbacher (B3), Clayton Haupt (B4), Adri Wessels (B5) and Housten Yu (B6) were in action. Both Luan and Adri managed a draw against the strong Angolan team.

South African Closed Chess Championships 2014

3 - 12 January 2014

Dantelle Joubert was honoured by being invited to the prestigious South African Closed Chess Championships. She played in the Women B Section and finished right on top of the leader board. Due to the tie-break system she was declared the silver medal winner. Well done Dantelle.

SA School Sport National Championships

Dec 2013

Curro Durbanville, packed by no less than four Steinitzian players, won the U/13 Open division at the SA School Sport National Championships in Bloemfontein. The Steinitzians in action were Luan de Jager (B1), Dantelle Joubert (B2), Ethan Samuels (B3) and Andreas de Jager (B6). Both Chad Willenberg and Clayton Haupt were also in actions representing The Settlers U/18 Open team.

About

There was the initial debate on what our name should be. Some members mooted for the name Bonteheuwel chess club but thanks to the visionary foresight the players agreed to the name Steinitz. Ardent chess historians will know that Wilhelm Steinitz was the first officially recognised World Champion.
